1st XI Match Reports for May 3rd and 4th...
Papplewick & Linby 97 AO Kimberley 98-3
The only bright spot for Papplewick on a dismal day for the batsmen was the performance of Kosala Kulasekara. Having arrived at Heathrow at 6am Saturday morning from Sri Lanka. Kosala defied jet lag to play positively making 56 in an otherwise poor batting display.
Papp were quickly reduced to 17 for 2 by some accurate new ball bowling by Jason Gorman. Luke Fletcher (8) and Graeme Roberts (0) being the victims. When Gorman then removed Skipper Phil Defretias first ball, Papp were left struggling on 45-5. Gorman went on to record figures of 5-33 to rip through the Papp top order, ably assisted by John Shaw who recorded figures of 4-36
Kimberleys reply was jolted by the quick wicket of Nick Langford, who fell LBW to Jim Rhodes for 0 with the score on 9. Enter Josh Mangan Kimberleys Aussie import. Who embarked on a 70 run partnership with opener John Shaw. Before he was trapped LBW by Impressive young leg spinner Wasim Rana. Shaw followed quickly bowled by Rhodes but the damage was done and it was left to Skipper Michael Blatherwick and Tom Collishaw to guide Kimberley home and collect 20 points.
Sheffield Utd 90 AO Papplewick 91-3
Sundays game against Sheffield Utd in the Cockspur Cup could not have been anymore different from the previous day. After winning the toss Papplewick set about their task of bowling the opposition out in quick time. A great opening spell from Brad Matthews (3-23) quickly reducing the visitors to 7 for 2. Then after a mini revival in the hands of David Rogers (20) and skipper Neil Longhirst (25) who took the score to 46, the rest of the Utds batting crumbled to 90 all out with Wasim Rana bowling beautifully to claim 3-15 and Charlie Dagnall picking up 2-17 on debut.
With Luke Fletcher away making his Friends Provident Trophy debut for Nottinghamshire, Wasim Rana opened the innings with John Wakeling. However things did not go to plan as Tom Steel removed Rana (1) and Tiamoor Khan (2) to leave Papplewick 12 for 2. Skipper Phil Defretias then played with his normal aggression and freedom to fire 43 off 34 balls before being trapped LBW. While all this was going on John Wakeling played the anchor role to finish 24 not out and a quick cameo from Rich Winton 11 not out saw Papplewick home and a 2nd round tie away to Wollaton awaits.
