1st XI Match report vs West indian Cavaliers
WI Cavaliers 88 AO Papplewick & Linby 89-3
They say you can’t keep a good man down. Well after winning the toss on Saturday and asking the Cavs to bat, Phil Defretias showed just what a class act he is. Coming on to bowl first change he destroyed the Cavs batting with a display of swing and seam bowling the likes of which have probably never been witnessed at Papplewick before. Daffy picked up 7 for 23 in 8.1 overs to reduce the Cavs to 88 all out in just 27.1 overs. Yet he was first to admit that everyone played their part and he was quick to heap praise on the rest of the bowling attack.
Opening bowlers Luke Fletcher 7overs for 18 and Brad Matthews 1 for 13 reduced the Cavs to 10 for 2, Matthews having Skipper Steve Atkinson caught behind for 1 and Fletcher showing he can throw that large frame around in the field when hen needs to, producing a diving stop, pick up and throw to run out Hussain for 0.
Jim Rhodes 1 for 29 then got in on the act by dismissing the hard hitting Andy Haye (17) to leave the Cavs 55 for 3. Enter Defretias and the rest is history, John Wakeling picking up 3 catches and a stumping to put the icing on the cake.
Papplewicks’ reply was rocked when opener Tony Betteridge was out LBW to Ricky Anderson for 3. But from that moment on Papp never looked in any danger. Luke Fletcher was next to go for 18, after doing all the hard work he tried to slog-sweep Iftikar and was bowled. This brought Kosela Kulasekara (15) to the wicket, who continued to keep the run rate at 3 an over before being caught behind again off the bowling of Anderson to leave Papp 54-3. However John Wakeling 21 not out and Phil Defretias 26 not out guided Papp home in the 26th of the 73 overs they had to knock off the runs.
